Passing Days

As the days pass by getting closer and closer to winter, mom's flowers are dying. Not just because of the cold atmosphere, but also because of how much sunlight it is receiving. There's been a lot of clouds lately and the days are darker. Clouds play such a big role!(Julisa) Not just for the sunset but also for the sun to light up the flowers. Coming from what I know flowers need a lot of sunlight and water to live. Not too much because too much can be bad.
Also the sun are part of why the flowers have the colors they have. According to Tony Guerra, "They especially like sunlight because it contains several colors of light that they make great us of." Also by taking AP Biology I learned that the leaves take the colors from the sun as well. The leaves are green due to the sun's violet-blue and red light which then transmits into green. I never knew that until last week. Who knew the leaves gets its color from the sun.

Compost

It gets pretty dark right around 5:30. This week i went down to check where my sunflowers were once at. I noticed that its not only the sunflowers that's dying but also some of my moms flowers. Probably because I suck at watering. But luckily some of my moms flowers are still alive! Some of them even looks healthier. I thought to my self.. why are some dying and some not? Then i thought because of composting.
Dead flowers can complete the circle of life by becoming compost to feed the soil, which will feed the next generation of flowers. Nothing lasts forever, but dead and dying flowers can live on by going through the composting process. My mom always gathers up the dead ones and compost it next to the other flowers. I once asked her why and she told me that it feeds up the plants.

here's a short animated clip of composting

Dead but Alive

So now all my sunflowers are now dead... Well i think is it. The bright yellow flower is now gone. But they are still standing like they are alive.
I was guessing they would just collapse down because of their skinny bodies; I guessed wrong.

"Winter Sunflower"
It sucks to have dead sunflowers.  I was hoping it would live through half the winter. Imagine how cool they would look! Bright Yellow in the White Winter Snow. But the photo I pasted on this blog reminds me of my sunflowers; Candy Cane shaped; all gathered up. Hopefully they would live again when Winter pass.

Winter is Coming!

Taken by Me

While the Winter is getting closer and closer. Sadly my sunflowers are slowly dying.
Their golden flowers are falling. Their posture are lacking. They used to stand up straight and tall like they were the Kings and Queens of my Moms Garden. But now Winter is coming.
I won't stop observing the flowers. Maybe their death could lead into something beautiful. I mean sunflowers are beautiful.

This one was one of the sunflower I had left that was still pretty but young. The one underneath it was an adult one. You can tell because of the size difference. Even though the adult one is dead, it still looks pretty interesting! There is so much to look at once you get so close to it. Just like how the dead ones are kind of covered up with this crusty green leaf with little pokey stuff on the surface.

Maybe it's their type of burial?

The Looks

The Looks of the Sunflowers are somewhat really weird.
Beautiful and weird at the same time.
I went online to look at some sunflower facts and i saw this poem which to me was very clear to imagine. And also explains how the sunflowers look like.

They sway like brainless cretins,
Black of mouth agape
Hungry for flesh or marrow.
But their heads are crowned of gold
And their bodies tell of starvation
And they bear skin a green nearing putrid.

Unable to move out of the cold
They succumb to necrosis
And feed the soil.

"But their heads are crowned of gold
And their bodies tell of starvation."
I really like that line because it tells me that there is always something beautiful in everything.
Like how the sunflowers has a crown of gold while at the same time has a starving body.

Noticing

Noticing

09-17-14
Today i noticed that the steams of my sunflowers had 3 kinds of colors. There's Brown, brownish red, and green. they also have a lot of pokey things sticking out. It doesn't hurt but you can feel them.
I haven't really searched why they have them. But I'm guessing it is to keep bugs away from eating them.
